The Grant Park Music Festival began in 1935, which presenting music programs by Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus. Also, world class guest artists share the stage with them. There is an interesting story of how this festival began. In 1931, the Chicago Band Association offered to form a band to play free concerts. The venue was built that same year by the Chicago’s South Park Commissioners. Believe it or not, the festival was born when the Great Depression put many Americans out of work. James C. Petrillo, leader of the Chicago chapter of the Federation of Musicians, saw the Depression as an opportunity to put unemployed musicians to work in a public works program that had a widespread cultural impact.
