Studio Habits and the Built Environment

Through Studio Habits and the Built Environment, arts specialists within the Chicago Public Schools participate in an cohesive dialogue around studio practice in the field of art education. They develop benchmarks for evaluating their teaching and assessments for evaluating their students learning.

Student and teacher work related to the program will be viewed in an annual showcase. Teaching artists will participate in workshops, lesson plan development, and will disseminate work to other teachers in the district. In the final year of the project, a Studio Habits and the Built Environment Symposium will bring in local experts and advocates.

During this three year project:

  • The lead cohort consisting of 30 CPS art teachers will participate in 54 hours of professional development training
  • Thirty CPS classroom teachers will participate in 24 hours of professional training to advance their practice, increase student artistic behavior and improve the quality of the classroom environment through the use of the Studio Habits
Seventy additional CPS art teachers will attend a Lois Hetland Studio Habits presentation to acquire a beginning level of knowledge around the use of the Studio Habits in their classroom.

On-going documentation of local CPS classroom studios will be featured on the project website and a collection of Studio Habits resources and reflections will be posted online for future replication by arts specialists in the district.
