Family and Community Involvement

Professional consultants and community organizers assist schools to engage parents and community members in active support of education for their children through conferences, forums, workshops (Conflict Resolution, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families, How to Talk so Your Child Will Listen), book clubs, classes, home visits, college readiness and financial planning activities. Programs are customized to meet parents' articulated needs, encourage lifelong learning, and enhance students' academic aspirations.

Research Base and Opportunities

Our family programming is founded on research, philosophy and practices of adult educators: Knowles, Mezirow, Lieb, and Bookfield; Freire's critical pedagogy/transformative education philosophy; Verbach's family literacy initiatives; Moll's funds of learning philosophy; and parent community researchers, Epstein of Johns Hopkins University; Mapp and Henderson's seminal work published by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, the Kentucky Department of Education; and the PTA.
