motivational interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is the behavioral change approach that understands that change comes from within. An individual can learn to recognize behavior harmful to themselves and others and develop the techniques that strengthen the motivation and commitment to change.

MI is collaborative rather than prescriptive, honoring the client’s autonomy and self-direction rather than providing advice or direction. Since 2005, the Center for College Access and Success has worked with schools in restorative discipline practices that use MI, along with adventure education, as an alternative to in-school suspension.
